I've had a couple of roofers out to look at pricing a new slate roof, the planner wants random width, deminishing course, so as to fit the local vernacular. Having got the quotes back they talk of slate sizes - 18s, 16s, 14s and 10s. Could someone enlighten me on what size these numbers equate to?

These refer to the slate length in inches. A row of 18" slates followed by a row of 16" slates, that is your diminishing courses as specified. Larger ones at the bottom!

Ed, thanks for the information link, very useful.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to how much I can expect to pay for slating a roof area of 68m2. My first quote suggests a price of £2200, it sounds a lot to me!

Is that labour only ..? And that's the plan area or the roof area..?

If that's £30 / Sqm for membrane, batten and slate then that's not that bad for a diminishing course layout
