jfb
As the title asks - anyone know from this picture of pipe and end cap what is in this pipe? Water/ gas?
Jeremy Harris
Hard to be sure. Do you have mains gas? If so, it looks suspiciously like an old capped off gas pipe to me.
ToughButterCup
It doesn't matter what's in it. Assume the worst, and until you can disprove it, treat it as hazardous.
PeterW
Would guess gas as that’s a 1/4 turn gas cock....
Nickfromwales
Deffo Gas. If there is a new supply in the house off yellow mdpe then it'll likely have been cut off in the pavement when new gas lines were last installed. Ask your local gas network transporter ( not the supplier ) to call out and test it for you. Say you think you can smell a feint whiff of gas coming from it and they'll be there within 2 hours, faster normally
jfb
excellent - its not my house it is a friends house where he doesn't have any gas appliances/boiler (though neighbours do) I was hoping for him that it was gas in case he does replace the storage heaters for a wet system in the future and if it is still connected that would make things a lot cheaper. at the moment there is no gas meter in the house. it seems a slight liability at the moment as it comes up under the stairs and is not fixed to the wall over a 2.5m length. anyone know, assuming it is a live gas supply, what a typical charge would be to install a new meter ready for use? PeterW
Meter install is zero - supply pipe costs money ... wouldn’t surprise me if it was a supply as under stairs cupboards are a classic place to put a meter
