Connect and discharge to a surface drain?

If there is a surface drain nearby, as I think there is on my plot with the surface drain being located in the approach road, is it acceptable to connect to it and discharge rain water to it, and thus avoid the need to incorporate soak-aways for roof rain-water as, for example, @JSHarris did in his build?

My site is cramped so it would be nice to avoid the need for soak aways for roof rain water.

I am a complete beginner in this area. I have skip-read Section H3 of the Building Regs.

I think you need to talk to your local water company and/or the environment agency they are the people who will tell you if you can do that.  We had to get an approval for our surface to go into a ditch do the field.  I do know you can't discharge your surface into the main sewerage system.

Same here and I was lucky that BCO and Highways Dept allowed me to discharge roof drainage directly onto the lane.
