Rain noise on Velux type windows - is it better with 3G?

Hi, I'm just at the stage of designing my house and I have mentally discounted Velux type windows as my experience with them in the past has been that the rain noise wakes me up and causes sleepless nights.  However, I'm just wondering if new tech ie triple glazing etc has made this any better?  From a quick Google I can see that in theory 3G and acoustic glass should make a difference but I wondered if anyone has some real-world experience of this?

We have 3 passive approved triple glazed  electric Velux windows in a vaulted kitchen ceiling.

Noise is not an issue for me or my wife. None in bedroom though, a small one in the hall just outside bedroom, again noise not an issue.

Definitely much much better than 2G, and they also do one with thicker glass on the outer pane which lessens it even more, designed primarily for use in bedrooms, so may be worth looking at that unit

Yes it is. We went with the top of the range 3G ones for our bedroom (replacing 2G Veluxes) and now sleep through rain storms - most of the time.

You can further attenuate noise by installing integral, internal (Velux) blinds / curtains.

GGU PK10 0070 94x160 cm manually operated white polyurethane VELUX window, with the 62 pane in the bedroom.

 

This has reminded me though, we had one fitted in another room with a 68 pane (significantly cheaper) and this cuts down rain noise pretty well - but not speech noise from outside. As its lighter the hinges work better, my wife struggles to shut the ones in our bedroom.

Plus and Minus of electric Velux, it shuts if it rains ,but can’t open it again when rain stops until sensor dries out. A heavy due will close it and stop it opening.

We have a manual fly screen on ours, at ceiling level, which stays shut all summer so no flies, moths, betels etc drawn in by light. We however just don’t seem to get the insects round outside lights like we used to.

Ooh I like the sound of that - I have a real deep-seated hatred of moths ever since one flew into my mouth while I was sleeping.

Final addition, the VELUX Basic manual anti-heat blind does what it says and really does keep the room cooler. Our windows are in the north facing side of the roof but in summer get a decent amount of sun on them, so these help.

 

Cons? They are a pain to attach and detach, and my wife isn't tall enough to do them
