Painting wood burner

Following a water leak, we have a log burner that has developed a patina of rust on the door and frame.

 

We're going to give it a gentle clean to start with to see what the extent of the problem, thinking it's likely just surface rust from the moisture that was in the air. 

 

Is there a paint that anyone can recommend once the rust is removed?

VHT (Very High Temperature) paint is used on exhausts and the such, so start there.

Black stove paint is widely available.

 

Our local farm shop even stocks it (least they used to) and they have a branch in Liskeard which might be close to you? Mole Valley Farmers

They are close by (in Cornish terms).

 

Wonder if they have it gun metal grey

Back in the day, we used to use hotspot black grate polish to rub into the castings.  The rust would only ever be surface dusting of corrosion on the old hunter and Dunsley’s and would pretty much disappear when rubbing a finger over it.

Googleing    "log burner stove polish"   brings up a range of products.

 

Back in the days,  I'm sure we had "Stove Black" no idea what it was.

Stiff bristle pan brush tried and to be replaced by wire brush after Contura dealer have been contacted.

 

They also do their own "repair" spray paint. A bit more expensive than the general stove paint.
