Existing Terraced Sewer Pipe

Hi,

 

We're planning to build a ground floor extension to our 1960/70s terraced house, which is semi-detached at the end of the row.We have a manhole cover to the side of where we plan to build the extension and although we don't plan to build over it, we were wondering if anyone could give advice on whether the sewer pipe is public or only serves our house. Photos below.

 

If anyone could advise the best strategy for dealing with sewers/drainage, so as not to risk any issues when creating the foundations of the new extension it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, JM.

I'd imagine public. Watch it in the morning or evening when not raining. Is it flowing without any water running in your house?

Yes given where it is it looks like it is not only yours. If there is flow other than yours then building over the pipe will be your challenge as, under recent changes to the regs, the water company have control, and responsibilities, over all the sewers other than the very last one in a run and they have controls over what happens above and around the pipe.
