lizzieuk1 Posted July 27 Posted July 27 Morning all, So we're trying to work out the best way to provide our new electricity supply. We're still living in the old house whilst building the new one and wondering if there's a way to connect the old cable to a new one once we are ready to move from old to new. (Green is old house & old garage) The red line shows where the current supply is and we will need it to go to the blue box area where our utility will be. There is currently also a feed to the old garage (purple) from the current house. Any ideas of the best options for new supply? Is it even possible to join a new wire to extend the old supply 🤔 or are we better running a completely new cable - bearing in mind the old one currently runs from the East boundary under where the new garage will be? Slightly worried that will cost an extortionate amount though!
Alan Ambrose Posted July 28 Posted July 28 I think your local DNO will do a free visit to make a recommendation / give you some options. There are a lot of factors - age of supply, existing earth arrangements, availability of 3 phase, distance to main LV junction - that we don’t know. If it was me, I would want to future proof by getting a fully kosher connection now, probably running it into a permanent kiosk on the edge of your plot. There a bunch of discussion on the forum about installing new power connections.

Big Jimbo Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago Don't shoot me, just saying. When you spot the guys working in the street. Stop, chat, and get a phone number off One of the chaps. Loads of them do a bit of "private" work. They supply the gear, and you have the trench dug for them. They would extend the existing supply. I said don't shoot me. Just saying. It happens. 1
ProDave Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago So you are wanting a supply MOVE not a NEW supply. Significant difference. 2 ways to do this. MOVE the existing supply out of the old house to a temporary box somewhere and upon completion move it again into the new house. It costs for 2 moves. Alternative as many here have done is move it now to a kiosk somewhere close to the new house and leave it there forever. The meter will remain in the kiosk and the cable from there to the house is your responsibility. Any MOVE of the incoming supply is done by the DNO It is their cable their rules and only they can work on it. The best you can do is dig trenches for them to keep costs down. Whatever you do you must first get a quote from your DNO for the work, then post it here and we can discuss. 1
