wiggly critter Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago I have excess solar after 20kw battery storage. I plan to remove my bunk tank fed ( not mains ) gas combi boiler with an ASHP. I will continue to use the gas for cooking only. Is this a simple operation?
MikeSharp01 Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago Wow that is some battery! Not a massively difficult task and you may be entitled to grant for £7.5K to help you get it done. PS I see this is your first post so welcome to THE forum for people like us.

If a customer disconnects from the gas grid, and then a heat pump is installed, then reconnects back to the gas grid (say for cooking purposes) what would happen? 2. Can a gas connection be retained for cooking purposes? Answer: Heat pumps are eligible to be installed in properties on or off the gas grid. A gas connection may be retained or reconnected for cooking purposes. 2. Can a gas connection be retained for cooking purposes? JoeBano Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago I pay more in standing charge then i use in gas for cooking on the hob.

He should have no standing charge. Just a monster of a tank that he will fill once every decade. The clues in the name BUS (boiler upgrade scheme) - how you cook is nothing to do with scheme. Boiler will be removed heat pump plumbed in instead. But would think the best way to manage it would be via MCS umbrella scheme.
Dave Jones Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago first job is to do heat loss calcs for your home to see what heat output you are going to need. It's not that difficult just time consuming. here is a free one https://www.changeplan.co.uk/heat_loss_calculator.php once you have that then its just a case of sizing a heat pump and emitters. You can add cooling as well for example by using fancoil radiators. Upgrade the hob to induction and get yourself a nice outdoor kitchen from the saving for blazing steaks on!!
Dillsue Posted 30 minutes ago Posted 30 minutes ago 14 hours ago, wiggly critter said: Is this a simple operation? Depends is the honest answer. If currently on a combi then you'll likely need a new DHW cylinder. If your emmitters are predominantly radiators then there's a fair chance some or all of them will need replacing/swapping round or additional ones fitted. To get the best out of the ASHP system you want accurate heat loss calcs so the HP and rads can be sized correctly. Having excess solar is primarily a summer issue so will likely have little impact on the economies of running a HP predominantly in the winter. Finding someone who can design and commission a system for you may take some doing. My advice would be spend a good while researching how to get HPs to work efficiently and what constitutes a well designed/commissioned system before you start talking to suppliers. You'll be better placed to know if they know what they are doing!
