3/4" to 1" Adapter on outside tap problem

Good evening,

 

I have an outside tap with a 3/4"thread. I'm trying to set up outside irrigation and the timer connector is 1". It comes with a 3/4" to 1" adapter which I thread on as far as it can go. The connector leaks and I initially thought i was a problem with the connector itself however on further inspection it appears the the connector is not screwing in far enough and mating with the washer/seal because it is hitting the underside of the tap (see picture).  Is there a shallower adapter I could use? Seems to be a bit limiting if the tap is so poorly designed you can't use standard fittings?

 

Any help would be appreciated.

I've got an irrigation setup with similar timer. 

 

I used a splitter on mine, which allows me to still use the tap without disconnecting the system!

Actually, mines got valves on it.. Like this one
