I’m nearly at the end of my buil and this included a DIY install for a wall hung bio ethanol fireplace.  But in order to get a Completion certificate I need a Building Regs part J checklist signed by a competent person.  Any ideas on how to get a checklist completed and who is supposed to sign it?

Who is it asking for the checklist? We’re installing one too, no flue. My understanding is Part J Section 4 asks only that a carbon monoxide alarm is fitted in the same room.

if you look at the checklist it doesn’t seem to apply (Appendix A). Also if it did it looks like competent self builders (us) could complete it themselves and just leave the ‘registered membership of…’ line blank.

There was some discussion of these on here a while ago, stating some particular nasties being produced as a product of combustion.

Have you looked into this fully, as I do like the idea vs a wood burning stove for a real flame, when a clients remit includes one, but the report put me off a little.

Folk on here seem to have got on well with them though, so not sure about the concerns I had heard. I think it was a Wiki link posted here.

Anyone recall this discussion, can't seem to find it and I'm worrying it may have all been a dream lol.

Some reading here:

A bit more science on this one

Enjoy!

We burn bioethanol on our boat for the cooker.  Contrary to popular belief it is not odourless and it does need ventilation, a lot of it in the small space of a boat. The CO alarm will sound very quickly if the hatch is not open.

It is way better than burning meths of the cooker!!

In a house I much prefer a WBS with a proper flue and combustion air direct from outside.

Our cunning plan is to use a bioethanol burner safely closed inside our WBS on days when we really don’t need the warmth but we need the comfort.  Scary the CO alarm thing though….

BCO has provided a checklist of paperwork required in order to get  a completion certificate and the part J is included . I guess I just complete  Appendix A myself and see if that’s OK,
