Hell there

Would like to make a bar like this so it looks as neat and cheap as possible

Thinking of using old pallets for the side of the bar. But not sure how to get the nails out of the pallets so it dose not split the timber, and what paint I should use?

What kind of wood and paint do you think I should use for the work top?

And same question again for the skirting boards?

I all ready have some old fence post wood that I am considering using for the frame. But I am unsure of how to attach all of the above to the frame as nails and screws would look so tack?

Any advice please?

Thanks

@Onoff, excellent. Seems to me, OP, that you'll only maybe need 1 row of 'visible' fixings in the middle of the height of the pallet-wood, since the top and bottom 'skirtings' can trap the rest. I would use oval nails, punch below the surface of the wood and use coloured filler to hide the punch-marks. The likely 'mottling' of the pallet-wood will probably help to hide them too. Edit: Make sure to 'acclimatise' the pallet-wood to its intended environment before you commit to any fixings.

  • What you have
  • the same
  • theres your answer to the two points above
  • who (other than you)  is going to notice them when they are in the wood?

Quite a lot of people if it proves to be a success in the end

It dose look rather tact to me with resects!

Translation please.

Check out YouTube for how to dismantle pallets. Generally involves a bfo lump hammer and block of wood to start with.

So I finally found some pallets and put them together

What do you think of it so far?

Yes, it looks like pallets stuck together. Looks like you've achieved your aim of as cheap as possible. Cheaper still would have been to have reused the salvaged nails from dismantling.

& You said the pictures I posted up looked tacky! 😂

After I have sanded them down, I am wondering what to paint them with to make them look like the bar for sale at the top of the page

And what kind of skirting board and counter top I can buy to make it look the same?

Thanks

Probably a stain of some sort. I’d avoid any sheen, so a Matt or satin would probably resonate with the ‘vibe’ you’re trying to create with raw materials, methinks.

Clear (varnish) would likely be a bit too honest, so sample a couple of shades on off cuts and see what appeals to you. 👍

The skirting and bar top will just be more pallet wood suitably sanded and stained / varnished.

That looks excellent quality work and you've inspired me to do something similar - I keep a beer stocked fridge in the garage - for garden/garage refreshment - it would be so much better if I built a bar area in the corner of the garden - I could run an extension lead for the electricity out thro the garage window and that corregated clear plastic sheeting would keep the worst of the weather off it.

Shabby Chic I think they call it

I've subsequently spoke to Mrs Alien about my plan - apparently I have to kill her first or something like that - definitely involved a dead body

Nothing laying around to sample sorry to say!

But do you think the one in the photo has used a grey color?

I know nothing about paint so i dont know the diffarence between stain, matt and satin

I dont think you have any chance of making the skirts out of pallets and looking like the above photo without a plain and chissel.

And zero chance with the counter top too!

Do you think any of these would make a nice counter top?

These are quite cheep. but painted the right paint and color, do you think they would match for the side skirtings?

Don't take it so personally - problem with written communications on the internetz is that you can't see the face of whoever is writing - so it can easily be miss-understood.

You are doing a fine job of recycling ;)

Yup, just take stuff with a pinch of salt, life's too short to give a shit about other peoples opinions, whatever makes you happy I guess.

The caveat is, when you ask the world to reply on a forum, that it's best to assume that you'll get a mixture of good / bad / ugly, which you can take howsoever you wish.
