Boyblue
Believe it or not, you guys are the world's foremost experts on beam and block Floors ; at least the english speaking world, and I'd like to learn more about it, so I'm here in hopes of learning a bit, confirming what I have learnt and, possibly adapting some of your methods to fit our environment. I was general contractor a couple lifetimes ago, so I may be able to help now and then with some issues. I guess we'll have to see.

twice round the block
You need a large concrete profile beams, the same shape as your tram track in your harbour front but bigger..... and no cutting out a section of track to see ! They don't sell or use beam and block! They went another direction, engineered lumber and wood are their materials of choice. With that combination they get pretty firm floors, so much so that they can probably pour concrete on that base if they want to.

saveasteading
3 hours ago, SteamyTea said: How does that affect your building standards/codes I know this! A builder friend inherited a plot and built a wooden house with all the timber from whatever florida's b & q is called. The standard was simply that they had to use a local builder within their team of builder mates from the uk. 4 x 2 and 6 x 2 mostly. The building bends with the winds due to being smallish sections and just nailed together. On stilts too so the lashing surf runs underneath. No bco just someone from the Town Hall. Structurally sensible. Fire would be another matter. BTW I did some crazy-paving sea steps (there is only so much sunbathing and lobster eating I can tolerate) that have withstood many storms...should be on my cv. @Boybluewhh are you asking about beam and block, if you can get it? Going to start a factory? NB the reinforcement is tensioned wires not just bars.

I'm not sure which seems less likely to me: that you wanted to be Father Christmas or that someone hired you for the job.

Never wanted it, but workmate bottled out. I was hired as an Elf, but got promoted. Peter's Principle came into play.
