Presence sensing

Recommended Posts

Some things are just TOO difficult.

Easy to detect a moving person , stationary is another matter ! ( no pun intended) .

Aqara fp2 is the best I have found , but some ghosting ; I’m in the kitchen with apparently another person . I leave kitchen and ghostie doesn’t .

So as usual I’ve tried every sensor I can find .

But ! I think I’ve found the perfect one ( at the moment )

The everything presence 1 . Ultimate test ! Sat on sofa watching projector no one moving ….. still detects presence ! Awesome !

As I’m open plan it’s fine for the lounge because it’s at the back of the house . So no zoning etc required .

Kitchen and diner need zones otherwise you’ll be able to trigger one from the neighboring zone . So 2 presence sensors lite on the way . No pir , but zoning . Will test against fp 2 . But as most of you aren’t open plan - esp1 is the best !

Personally I'd always go with cameras for this. The only place we won't have cameras is bathrooms and bedrooms. They are cheap and they give you more info.

Is the room occupied? By whom (including multiple people)? What activity are they performing (e.g. are they sleeping, cooking, watching TV etc) and also what state are they in (sleepy, actively looking for something).

There are lot of automations where this info can be helpful.

The rooms without cameras can use a fly in the box algorithm to know occupancy (who, how many) by watching who goes through the door.

Tried that . With human sensing ( tpu etc ) got way too many false positives . Fine for outside I.e someone passing by but found to be too unreliable inside .

What did you try? I've found Nvidia Deepstream and Frigate both to work fairly well for this. I'm not using it extensively at the moment but I use it on the stairs and I get zero false positives.

Yeah frigate . I was using it open plan to detect people in/out zones . On a staircase I imagine it would be pretty much spot on . Open plan though where a shirt left draped over a seat ( or even the seat can be sometimes potentially a human ) . Also found it relatively slow I.e needs x frames to determine probability of a human . mmWave seems to be so far ( after much calibration and testing ) perfect ( until SWMBO is sat in the dark of course ) . Also with cameras swmbo and friends think I’m spying on them , which I am .

Makes sense, you might have slightly more luck with Nvidia Deepstream for that purpose as it handles occluded objects better. There are also some improvements in the latest beta for Frigate that handle stationary objects better but unsure how this would handle occluded objects.

I'll be playing with it extensively once the build is complete so I'll do a detailed write up if I get everything working properly. We are somewhat open plan too.

Glad mmWave is doing its job at the moment.

A write up would be great . I’ve no issue going back to previous technologies/ attempts . In bedrooms / bathrooms basic pir are more than sufficient for me . I really want fast facial recognition processed locally ; shouldn’t be too long for that to come along . I know there are addons to frigate for this - but not good enough yet …

The best local face recognition I've used yet is via Homekit Cameras, they use a local device like an Apple TV to do the processing and it works well. The main downside being getting at the actual results so they can be used for automation (other than inside the Homekit ecosystem) is tricky. I've used Scrypted to turn some non Homekit cameras into Homekit ones.

Great tip thank you!

I got a shelly BLU recently and really unimpressed by the complexity getting it to integrate with anything outside their ecosystem. I'll grab a couple these and see how it goes

The enclosure is ugly as, but seems plausible to put it into some other case.

Yeah it ain’t pretty compared to fp2 . But functionality over form !

Remember no zoning with eps1 …

Tell me more about the fp2

Can it send event notifications over Mqtt or a webhook? What hub do you recommend?

Their website makes it out as the absolute kitchen sink of protocols but their manual and faq are offline

https://www.aqara.com/eu/product/hub-m3/

I have a couple places where radar detection could be handy (e.g. the office) but one where fine grained zoning is needed (kitchen, detecting cooking vs using sink vs passing through) - I think a camera will ultimately be best there.

I use with home assistant as that is easily the best HA .

As they are HomeKit have to be added via that and then ‘frigged’ across to assistant . Best zone sensor I’ve found ; but do get ghosting . My esp1 will now replace the fp2 in the lounge ( zoning isn’t required there ) . Was going to put it on eBay . But if you want it for a song let me know asap .

Is that fp2 direct to HomeKit or via their hub? (Which hub?)

The advertising suggests the hub connects to everything under the sun, so a bit of a kick to hear HomeKit + frigging is required to set it up with any of those alternative platforms

I’ve no hub . So you connect it say to your iPhone I.e HomeKit . Then run a HomeKit integration on home assistant . Then remove from HomeKit on your iPhone and it magics across to HA . You could get their hub - but it just seems extra unnecessary cost if you are already running home assistant ( though it might expose more entities as its official )

Ok much as it horrifies me to welcome a device into my home that was previously used to monitor your comings and goings 😂, I'd be interested in this if you are letting it go.

What song would you like?
