Scaffolding cost - reasonable?

Recommended Posts

I've just been quoted £7k+VAT for 10 weeks of scaffolding around our new timber frame house. The perimeter of the two story build is roughly 51m and the footprint is 122m2. Does that sounds reasonable? Thanks!

I paid half that for 20 weeks 200m2

two years at the height of the price hike But was also quoted similar to you from the company that did our previous build They had grown from a dozen employees to over fifty

I found a guy that had only been going 18 months

Shop around

On the face of it, the cost of scaffolding does seem steep but it is a necessary evil unfortunately - Yes shop around as prices will vary - that said, the industry is full of H&S requirements which is often reflected in the price. Cheaper operators may be out there but does that come at a cost?

The price I paid for scaffolding irked me but I put it down to just one of those costs - a bit like pouring money into the ground for foundations !

Welcome to the world of self building😁

Some businesses have loads of kit, so the time period isn't significant. They are charging for the labour.

Others have hardly any, so it matters a lot....or they take it from elsewhere and paint their own colour code on it.

Worth having several quotes from bigger and smaller.

Changing the scaffolding mid project cam be costly too. Will that be jecessaet?

Depends where you are. We paid £8k incl VAT 2-storey, 100sqm footprint, 10 weeks with a flexible end date (which is proving handy after the last 2 storms). Went with a big local company, so they have loads of kit (no pressure to get it back), could accommodate the erect 3 sides for the TF company and then 4th side a few days later and weekly scaff tag check is easy because they’re down the road.

On VAT you can ask them to zero rate the labour costs if you’re self building.

Good point. They have assumed a few lifts during the build. I’ll get more quotes

I think that was meant to be 'necessary.'  Yes ask, and some will include some minor changes.   most importantly,  to tell the gangs using it they only get one readjustment , ot whatever.
