OVO are trying to raise funds and possibly merge with Scottish Power, as they cannot meet the financial requirements of OFGEM.

Cheaper to use less.

Though there does come a point where diminishing returns happen.

And there in a nutshell is the root of their demise................

Enjoy it whilst it lasts

How many Energy "Distributors" have gone to the wall in the last 9 years??

The answer according to google is 51

Quite disappointed the answer wasn't 42..........

Or be put on a standard tariff somewhere else until everything is legally complete.

It just highlights how difficult our energy market is and is still dominated by a few large companies. I’ve  had two (maybe three) companies go bust Bulb and People that I recall. The People one was particularly difficult because I moved at the same time. I paid the final bill etc. Two years later I got a legal letter demanding £334 for a different final payment that they claimed to have sent me. It was eventually dropped after months of back and forth. It also impacted my credit rating for a while. Not sure I’d ever go back to trying any of the smaller suppliers now.

Think the biggest problem is legislation.

This ranges from quality of supply to building and connecting new generation.

All put into place for good reasons, but then executed by morons.

From personal experience that's not entirely the case with our DNO, SPEN Manweb. Increasing PV export capacity a few years ago was agreed in a few days with their engineers followed by a seamless formal G99 application. Similarly in the last few months an LCT application to connect a heat pump and EV charger was reviewed and approved in 2 days with emailed confirmation of approval. Not bad for a big outfit

Do you mean I could just hang around with them until the very last when Ofgem (or whoever does it) shuts them off fully and I get moved to someone else?

I actually signed up to switch to Octopus Cosy earlier today but received notice from Octopus that...

"Your previous energy supplier has objected to your electricity switch... We can't complete your switch until it's sorted and unfortunately it's not an issue we can resolve on your behalf.

There's a few reasons why this may have happened:
There's an outstanding balance with your old supplier.
If this is the case, you'll need to settle the outstanding amount or agree a payment plan with your previous supplier before the transfer can continue...."

No I mean if you leave it to long you are moved to a new supplier (not of your choosing) and will be out on a standard rate tariff. This is likely to remain that way for some time.

But from the sounds of it, it is already too late to move yourself.

If there's an administrator at the helm there's a fair chance theyll block anyone leaving if your account is in debit. They may also temporarily block anyone leaving until they've got on top of the companies affairs.

Good news is Ofgem will look after your interests if they ultimately go bust and move you automatically to a supplier of last resort(SOLR)which you can leave in fairly short order once any account debit is cleared....we went through 4 suppliers at the end of 2021 when prices went daft.

Try and keep your account balance around zero if you can as it can take a little while to get credit back from an administrator. Any account credit is supposed to be transferred to the SOLR but that credit might take a while to get back if you jump ship from the SOLR to another supplier. Don't be afraid of stopping a direct debit if credit is building on your account!

Yes, this is a PITA but quite secure.

We were with Scottish Power but moved from choice to Yorkshire, they went bust and OFGEM changed us to SP again. Moved to Orbit, went bust, same story.

All pretty smooth, getting Octopus to install a smart meter so we could migrate from SP to Cosy was a great deal more time-consuming.

we are on direct debit and pay them the same date every month. So only have this months due which I thought we could settle via the switch request with Octopus. I'll call Tomato tomorrow and see If i can settle up and then get them to approve the switch.
If they don't then I'll just wait for Ofgem to do the change to SOLR and go from there.

Thanks for the replies
