DIYDan1981 Posted Thursday at 11:40 Share Posted Thursday at 11:40 (edited) Hi, I am looking to fit a padstone to support an already fitted RSJ (currently supported by an acro). The RSJ is runs the full width of the property (9m). It is already supported by two vertical steels. The bit that needs support is the overhang over the side extension (about 2.5m from the vertical support). The SE has specified a PAD12 (440 x 215 x 102mm). The builders have left a 140mm high gap to fit the padstone which isn't enough space to fit the padstone. So, I'm guessing I have to cut down the bricks below the RSJ to fit the padstone. I obviously can't raise the height of the RSJ since it's already locked in place by the two vertical steels. Would I allow a small 1-2mm gap below the RSJ which would be packed with steel or slate shims? Any advise and warnings would be much appreciated. Thanks Dan Edited Thursday at 11:42 by DIYDan1981 Added pictures
Brickie Posted Thursday at 16:42 Share Posted Thursday at 16:42 That cabling & the timber either side are going to give you a headache. How come the builder’s not installing the pad stone?
Mr Punter Posted Thursday at 17:31 Share Posted Thursday at 17:31 I would mark around where the padstone is going, adding 15mm bottom and left and stitch drill to form the pocket. Leave the right hand side until the padstone is in and fill that bit in later.

I would try to get it snug under the steel. You can pack in more mortar form the front and right side. You could prop the the padstone with some small bits of masonry, but packers will also be OK. Conor Posted Friday at 10:30 Share Posted Friday at 10:30 Ask the SE if a ~100mm thick padstone would suffice. Put it in as a full block width. Save a lot of faff.
Alan Ambrose Posted Friday at 10:55 Share Posted Friday at 10:55 Haven't used it yet, but I believe there’s a specific high strength grout for filling smallish gaps below RSJs. Maybe this kind of thing: https://www.sealantsandtoolsdirect.co.uk/sika-sikagrout-111-gp-flowable-anchoring-bedding-grout-compound-527763?language=en-gb¤cy=GBP&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADx-2OKUoquVV-r9mmQBVO6w7J6RI&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInuTWivy6iQMVy4dQBh0brCu2EAQYASABEgK5zPD_BwE
