Floor joists: in blockwork, on masonry hangers or on ringbeam?

Interested to hear people's thoughts here - how did you fit your intermediary floor joists?

A very quick comparison:

Built into blockwork: quick and easy for brickies, no squeeky floors, difficult to airtight (Tony Tray needed)

Joist Hangers: better for airtightness (but detailing still needed to account for mortar drying, timber shrinking), pre-engineered by posi joist designer, have heard they move and can be squeaky

Ring Beam: ideal for airtightness, brickies and just construct the walls, more work to construct, structural engineer needed to specify bolts and sizes etc, again have heard they move and can be squeaky

Thoughts?

On my build we used joist hangers built into block work, no squeaky floors, air test was good.

Did you seal around the hangers for airtightness?

Yes, the gap between upstairs flooring and downstairs ceiling was parged (above and below was wet plastered).

Hangers are more money,

A pittance in the cost of building a house

built in are not,

Timber joists shrink so can become loose in the blockwork, joists are screwed to hangers to stop them moving.

We’ve got floors that are built into blockwork in current house. They bounce a bit on a couple of long spans but don’t squeak.

anyone else any experience with hangers? I wonder if we should specify 400mm spacing if we go with hangers..

I went with 400mm spacing but joists specced at 600 because I hate bouncy floors.

Never had a problem with them - just make sure you fix the timbers to them with the square-twisted nails intended for the purpose (aka joist hanger nails).

If you do reduce joist spacing, make sure you still have enough space for any pipes or the like that you need to fit between them.
