What can I use to fill huge hole Garden?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I have what was an old pond/roman bathing pool in my garden. To give some context it's 230cm (L) x 150cm (w) and approx 100cm deep.

I would like to get rid of this, and redo the whole garden. I am thinking of having a nice clean lawn.

I have started to demolish the pond. The base has been broken, and now going step by step.

However I don't know if I should fill the hole with the broken concrete and rubble, or to break and fill it with soil? Looking on sites a 1ton bag of soil, is around £70, and I will likely need three to fill it, which is fine. I will likely need more, for the rest of the garden, nonetheless.

Main question is with the broken rubble. Do I fill the hole with it, or remove it all, fill with soil?

Thank You

You could think about a big, rainwater storage tank in that ready dug hole. That's what I'd be doing.

Cover in a concrete slab or planks. Astro turf.

I suspect the soil you're thinking of might be a screened topsoil.

I would only use that for the top 300mm or so.

Other than that, crushed rubble or muck away below that should be fine in my opinion.

If intent on filling it then there's very likely to be an offer of free hardcore local to you.

Are all those slabs around it being scrapped? If so, smash or drill drainage holes in the bottom then heave any unwanted slabs, bricks, tiles etc in. Smash with a club hammer.

Have a look at gumtree etc, people are always getting rid of old bricks and rubble etc. won't cost you a penny. Might just need to do a few runs to collect. Rubble up to about 300mm. Make sure it's compacted before the skim of soil.
