MVHR Installation and Commissioning

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am looking again at sorting out the MVHR system of my new build and have a number of quotes. BPC in Ireland seem to come out cheapest and thinking of installing myself. Anyone had dealings with them?

Is it a simply task? I am quite hands on, so able to do a lot of things to save the pennies.

One thing tho is the commissioning..., is it easy to find someone to commission it ? I am in Argyll, Scotland and not sure if companies are willing to commission systems not supplied by themselves.

Or is it possible to DIY the certificate to give building control ?

The guy that did my air test did the MVHR commissioning for building regs sign off.  Should be able to find someone close to you - Google is your friend.

Install is pretty straightforward, just be methodical, long single runs, lots of tight bends are not good.

Locate the unit centrally plenum for flow and one for return

I just had delivery of MVHR from BPC. Had a lot of back and forward on the design layout, which I was expecting to be more detailed than it was. In the end I came up with the layout that best suited the as-built joists and walls. Even so, I have had to make an adjustment this weekend to the layout.

I am installing myself. It is not difficult, just sometimes fiddly - I am trying to fit distribution boxes between web joists with 400mm centres!! I also have to core drill two 180mm holes through a 203mm concrete Nudura wall.

So, take your time to make sure that the design will work in your property, carefully peruse the parts list from BPC before accepting their version of events, then crack on :)

I designed, installed and commissioned the MVHR in my PH. I drew up all the required commissioning paperwork for the BCO, who wasn't interested and didn't want to inspect it. It was a few years ago, and we are in England, so things might be different.

Ours provided comment on the design and said they were not happy with one aspect of the design. Also chased me for the commissioning cert and calibration certificate for the flow meter. Scotland.

Thanks for the replies and comments, guess I will give it a go then when the time comes and it can't come soon enough, been stuck in this caravan for 18 months already thanks the the two architects we have had that have been useless.

Still not out of the ground..... one day soon I hope, just getting as much sorted upfront as I can. I remember how the decisions are needed thick and fast once underway.

Get the design ready, flow rates etc. Align electrical and condensate drain requirements with other trades so they're not forgotten about. Check price of replacement filters and where to put the external intake and extract - roof or wall > 2.5m apart. Tried BPC for quotes, didn't end up buying from them. Did retrofit in last property, going to use same crowd in new build just started. They switches supplier but the rest of their kit is the same so waiting on a quote currently and will see how it works out.....
