grease stains on oak stairs

There are grease stains on my oak stairs (which have been sealed with diamond glaze in the past). I have tried de-greasing sprays, washing up liquid, salt, etc but to no avail. Any suggestions would be gratefully receive.

Grease should not mark varnish, are you sure it’s not coming out of the timber and now trapped under the finish

No the stairs have been in for 20 years.  Diamond glaze was done 10 years ago so is probably a bit worn by now.  The grease came from child eating sandwiches on the stairs !!!. (not mine).  Thanks anyway

IPA maybe? - the alcohol kind rather than the ale kind.

Kids eh? Who'd have em? I mean they just behave in the most childish ways.

Thanks, I will try IPA.  In the meantime I have just sprayed it with dry shampoo, which has improved it greatly.
