Redoctober
I read an interesting article in this month's Homebuilding & renovating Magazine which maybe inspirational to some, or the straw that breaks the camel's back for others ! There is a feature on a guy, who through allsorts of adversity, has eventually completed his own self built house - on an impressive budget to boot. It did take 4 - 5 years mind. Anyone else read it and if so what are your thoughts? I found him to be inspirational but sadly, there is no way Mrs W would allow me to take his approach !! PW. ToughButterCup
A link would help. I've looked, but can't find one (in the online version) Ian
Redoctober
No, sadly like you, I can't find a link on the interweb. Perhaps whilst the Issue is still current, they withhold such features for a while. PW.
Crofter
Is this the one about the brickie who built himself a 180m2 house for £80k? One of his big tips was to shop around endlessly. I would agree with this- it is very easy to fall into the trap of just opening an account at your nearest BM and buying everything from the one place. You will pay dearly for the convenience. So far, the biggest price difference I have found was in my joist hangers- some cheeky eBay sellers are asking £15 each, and the going rate seems to be about £6; I got the exact same ones for £2.52 from a specialist online retailer. Can you share who the retailer was...? May be worth a sticky thread somewhere around suppliers.. thoughts..?
Crofter
That one may have been Metro Fixings. Tradefixdirect were also good. An additional complication for me is delivery costs- many suppliers offer apparently great prices until you get to the checkout and find they want £30 to send you a tenner's worth of penny washers...

It certainly is - in addition to his cost cutting / savings he actually lived in a garden shed for 3 years - Nothing spectacular - just a basic shed from the local DIY place for a couple of hundred quid !! I shall keep an eye out online and if the article is published so, I will link it in. PW.
