Recommendations for Oak Timber suppliers

Hi,

 

I need to source 150mm x150mm x 3m Oak posts for a pergola/screen structure. I also need 150mm x 50mm x 24m oak beams.

 

Can anyone recommend a supplier? I've found a few but there are a fair distance from me and charge £180 for delivery. I'm in Fleet, Hampshire.

24 meters? That's going to take some finding I reckon.

woops. I meant 2.4m

Seeing as we are going to paint the Oak I'm now wondering whether we need oak or whether we could use a treated softwood. I kind of like the durability of it but maybe it's an overkill, what do you think?

The beauty of oak is that it weathers to a silver colour and doesn't need any treatment. It's quite acidic - you need to use stainless fixings, A4 rather than A2 if it's not too expensive.

 

I like to do things only once - so I used oak for our raised beds etc. If you paint then you'll be painting every few years, but if you insist then I would use Bedec 'Barn Paint'.

I ordered £1.5K of green oak from UK Timber  https://www.uk-timber.co.uk/  during Covid, worked out OK.
