Quite like the idea of mitered slate(see pic below) for the hips but wondering of any potential problems with leaks in comparison to finishing with a ridge slate over the top which is what seems to be the norm around here. Anyone go with this or can advise on potential issues.

You will need soakers on every course and lots of slate and a halves.  Hook fixing may be good here.

Probably a silly question, why would hook fixing be good?

If you are nailing it is often difficult to get 2 nails in because the slates are cut on the angle.  They can get caught by the wind.  The hooks prevent the bottom of the slate from lifting.

My builder used hooks and 1/ you can hardly see them 2/ you can replace a slate without horrible lead strips, I would always use them in future.

I went with hip tiles to match the ridge tiles.

Hooks it will be, haven't really looked at many options re. hip tiles but the couple I did see looked big, will see if there are some low profile ones, think the miter looks sleaker in comparison to the ones I saw.

Hi, how did you get on with this roof? I'm about to construct a close mitre hip roof, I'm a bit unsure about the soakers. Any advice will be welcome.

Does seem a lot of work, for something you will never look at again, until it leaks. And if it's not perfect will just annoy, until 1 month after and you realise you haven't looked at it.
