Best Place to Buy Plasterboards - Sound Proofing

We are at the stage in our build where we need plasterboarding and the builder is insisting to use the smaller 6*3 Plaster boards.  Does anyone have any ideas for the best place to buy these?

We need the following:

700 Sqm for walls and 1st floor ceilings.

150 Sqm of Sound proof plasterboards.

40 Sqm of Insulated Plasterboards ideally around 30mm of insulation or more.

12mm plasterboard throghout.

Also is there any better/cheaper way to sound proof ground floor ceilings so the sound does now travel to 1st floor.  We have standard 22mm joists between the ground floor and 1st floor.  1st Floor Floor boards are already glued down and screwed in.

Thanks in advance!

Best sound proofing for ceilings is to hang a suspended metal ceiling frame and fill the void with 50mm accoustic insulation. Same for walls, metal studs with 50mm insulation. We did that throughout with standard palsterboard and there's virtually no sound transmission between rooms.

You've probably no accounted for that in your design by the sounds of it, so next best thing is use gyprails or other resilient bars fixed to the underside of the floor joists. Like the below.

Oh wow this is something we have not accounted for however I dont see any problem with doing it.  Only thing that would be negative is the drop in the ceiling height I guess.

Ive just looked at the resilient bars and this could be another good option however would it not be good to just go for sound proof plasterboards?

In the last pic there the drop is only 50mm, but could be less if needed.

The bars will always perform better than boars directly on joists as you are dramatically reducing the solid transfer path for sound. Can't give you any figures to back that up tho.

He won’t get sound block boards in 6x3

Tell him to get a proper company in

A weeks work Tops

Or bring a strong friend and use 8x4 s

Yes Sorry he is aware the sound proof boards are of the bigger size.

There's no magic in soundproof boards AFAIK apart from their greater density, They absorb more sound energy per unit thickness.

You would have greater density overall with a second layer of standard plasterboard, albeit with greater thickness and more labour cost.

Theres a table here somewhere if I can find it.

As @Conor says you'll need to decouple the two floors, dropped MF ceiling, resilient bars are common methods.

Also taking care of reverberation. By including something like mineral wool in the void will stop sound bouncing around like a drum in your ceiling.

Perhaps the most important however is fastidiously closing any air paths for sound to travel through. Poorly sealed holes in the floor above down lighters for instance can negate all the good efforts elsewhere.

and insulation boards and 15 mil ceiling boards

6x3 boards are never used on new builds

There more for refurbs with tight access Hes adding work and cost to your build

and lots of unnecessary joints
