Do extractor fans always need to be near ceiling?

Recommended Posts

New build under construction.

Background constant extraction with heat exchange (Vent Axia Tempra fans) in kitchen, wet rooms. To prevent damp etc.

Showers sit against walls in some wet rooms. Mains electrics not allowed in that zone.
Only lower parts of wall (eg under windows) available for these fans.

Any reason why the extractors cannot be at lower level?

Have a read of the manufacturer instructions, they will give you clear guidance on where and where not to install.

You really want to extract at a high level where the steam is, not as it's condensing and coming down.  You also should either extract above shower/bath or close by

True.
Trying to improvise in rooms where this is not possible (ceiling not high enough to be outside the mains electricity-free Zone zero of the shower).

Any reason why the less desirable position below window should be avoided?

Basically not doing what they are designed to do, would be my opinion.  Piss poor performance?  If you have trickle ventilation it will just suck the air from the trickle vent instead of the room, it also needs to be away from the doorway.

Can you duct to a remote fan

An extract below a window would be really ineffective at doing what you want from it.

What's the room and ceiling layout? There's usually a way to find a solution. The extract needs to be as high as possible, and ideally far away from the door (if not immediately above or adjacent to the shower).

If you are standing in a shower, only the bits which "hold water" are zone 0. The walls above the "tray" are zone 1.

Great point. Core-drilled the extractor openings near ceiling. There is a 12V version of the gadget too.

Clincher: Kids might get their fingers into low placed extractors.
