Presumably there's also energy extracted from the phase change to ice, but that's more than balanced out by the corresponding need to defrost.

Yes, I think so.

Would need to do some data collection to find out.  Often thought that a couple of DHT22s either side of the fan/heat exchanger on an ASHP should be able to collect enough data.

Was going to do it on a work mates ASHP but he moved house.
