They are designed to be clamped in place in the plenum chamber fittings (these parts: http://cart.vacuumsdirect.co.uk/index.php?p=product&id=446&parent=66 ) where the threaded ring holds them in place, but you might be able to glue them in place instead. No rush Mate. Yes I also used the flexible pipe you mentioned and it is far superior. One problem I foresee with the knockouts is when balancing is you can't put the rings back in ??? So I am planning to make a polystyrene enclosure and drive it initially with inline fans which I already have. I'm really keen to make as much as I can not necessarily to save money although that is a welcome bonus, but like my plantation shutters. etc I can say I made that.
