I've seen some tiling that you have look at twice to work out just how they did it so bad. :/

Getting someone to admit they did it poorly is the biggest hurdle, and if you get any money back it's a bonus. Most will shrug it off and walk away, then it's down to yours and their interpretation of what was expected / asked for and what's been delivered.

Regardless of title or procedure it's not a simple process, and it's down to you keeping a calm, firm tone and simply to keep pursuing the individual with 100% conviction, stating over and over again that this issue will not go away and needs to be rectified. 

Materisls can often be assumed as write-offs, and as you'll not want the same jerk back you may never see a penny of remuneration unless you've been prudent enough not to pay them ( until satisfaction and completion ). 

Deffo a sticky situation but it's best, imo, to get things corrected, even if it's at some additional cost
