FRANKIE1
Hi I live in a conservation area, my back garden is next to a garden of a listed building. The boundary has a small metal fence of about 75cm high. In my side of the garden I have a thin hedge. I’d like to put up a fence next to the hedge (so looking at it from an aerial view it would be fence, hedge, boundary) as I have animals that can push their way through the hedge into my neighbours garden. My neighbours are saying I need planning permission. I’ve spent the past month trying to get a clear answer from the planning department of my local council but I’m just not getting an answer if I need planning permission or not. The latest reply is “if the fence would form a boundary surrounding the listed building then it will require planning permission” I think it isn’t forming a boundary as the boundary is there so I’m allowed to put up the fence, am I right or wrong? Roundtuit
Interesting question! Don't know the answer, but have experience of 'Listed' neighbours. What height is the proposed fence, and what height/type is the hedge?
PeterW
It’s not the boundary in the term planning are looking for - the metal fence will be the boundary. I would make it as low as practical - can you get away with a 4ft fence ..?

On our side the hedge was 1.5m thick so we have thinned it down as it was taking too much of the garden up. Originally I wanted the hedge completely removed and a fence erected but to compromise with our neighbours we thinned it down to 50cm.

I think I'd just put some 1.2m stock netting tight up against the hedge. I don't think anyone could reasonably argue that it needed permission, and it would stop animals escaping.
