I've got an oak block worktop from worktops express. About 40mm thick.

They advise a moisture barrier stuck to it's underside where you have a washing machine, oven or dishwasher. They talk vaguely about heat and moisture.

Is a barrier needed above a fridge with a small freezer compartment?

thanks

Nope - just things like dishwashers although a better method is to oil the underside too with Osmo Top Oil before the appliances are fitted as it stops moisture getting into the wood.

I am not sure oiling it once will provide a lifetime barrier. Metallised foils are better as they are impermeable and deflect heat away as well.

Most dishwashers come with a deflector plate which is to be nailed into wood/laminate worktops. Then tend to corrode with time so its better to use the metal foil and the deflector as belt and braces

Agree - I was suggesting oil plus the barrier rather than just oil (probably wasn’t clear)
