Strip foundations for Garden walls

Hi everyone, 

I'm a bricky in training, so please bear with me. When I'm digging strip foundations for a decorative garden wall. What questions should I be asking myself, when calculating the depth of it, also can I pour concrete straight the footing or do I need lay some sort of gravel and hardcore before hand.

Long walls should have piers at regular intervals, or zigzag them to make them more interesting and do away with piers.

I prefer wider to deeper, ideally no organic under concrete 3 or 400mm should be ok for depth 600 wide stops it falling over 450 is ok too 

 

definitely no throwing stuff under the concrete please
