CTucker
Hello, I'm struggling to find out for sure if I need planning permission or if I'm even allowed to put a bay window on the front of my house? I've read somewhere if it's to close to the road I may not be allowed? Can anybody help please?
recoveringbuilder
Don’t know about retrospectively but when we built our last house we weren’t allowed a bay window because none of the nearby houses had them! PeterW
Depends - where in the UK are you and are you in a conservation area ..? That will affect what you can do.
CTucker
I live in Plympton, Plymouth and it's not a conservation area.
DevilDamo
Assuming it’s not a full height bay window and something more like an oriel bay window, then in my opinion, you should not require formal Planning approval. The LPA however may have an argument that even an oriel bay window would require formal Planning approval as it would project forward of the principal elevation... assuming it would? Temp
I suspect it will count as an extension forward of the original principle elevation.
Temp
Confirmed... https://www.planningportal.co.uk/info/200130/common_projects/14/doors_and_windows (note - a new bay window will be treated as an extension and may require permission)
DevilDamo
Ah thought that may have been the case.
