Hi There

Please can you help - we are building a traditional style house and need clay roof tiles and trying to decide between hand made and machine made - and "machine made, hand finished". Any suggestions on suppliers to chose and what we should expect to pay?

Thanks

Andy

I used reclaimed hand mades around 200yrs old, cost about £1 per tile and were a tight pain. Look great, but consider it an 9000 piece Jigsaw puzzle, each tile has its own twist that means you have to mix and match carefully so they don't rock all over the place. With no nail holes you need them to nest nicely.

On a good day I'd do 4m² (240 tiles). I made a hoist to take 60 tiles up, but often brought 25 or more back down without suitable places for them.

Machine made can look a bit flat/uniform/modern where as hand made are slightly twisted so they give the roof a more textured look when laid. Sadly the company we used went bust.

Have you resolved this yet? Handmade/traditional tiles tend to be made by small local operations, so knowing where you are building would be important
