Many garden centres have a range of different colours of granite chips and gravel. Perhaps grey would less conspicuous? Perhaps a multi colour wouldn't show dirt as much? Or you could use some sort of rubbed glass. I think the main thing is to be backward visually rather than forwards. So it needs to be darker or the same as the pavers. .
