ecology mortgage solicitor fees

we have gone through the application process, all fine.  We now need to appoint a solicitor and had a guide price from ecology for 400 and it came back at 2K! What are other peoples experience of solicitor fees (not even sure why they are needed tbh),

I can dig the correspondence file out and check, but off the top of my head I think the mortgage deed cost something like £200 to £300.  If it had been more than this I'd have remembered!

did ecology give you a list of panel solicitors?

no, we just used the ones we had used to buy the plot a few weeks before assuming the cost would be lower... anyhow, going to try again ?

My conveyancing fees were £850 for my remortgage. It will work out at about £1100 when I sell my house.

I’ve just been quoted £1200 solicitors fees. I was thinking £200-300! What are they even doing for that? A couple of forms?! 
 

any recommendations for a more reasonable price?
