HID coverts ernest wright scissors, he has just got an email that his kitchen scissors are now ready, it’s been a year on the waiting list, he is so excited. He has the imperfect 2017 version which are used daily. We had a family joke when I was a kid where my dad would buy my mum a new pair of dress making scissors every Christmas as he would have used her scissors for varies inappropriate uses during the year, cutting carpet, Lino, rope, opening a tin of paint and other things a promised not to tell my mum. We like scissors, we also like things that are made well, we like fine craftsmanship and these also has a lovely back story. Although a long waiting list and are not cheap. HID thinks they are worth it, but I’m I worth a new pair of dress making scissors for Christmas? Let’s hope Santa thinks so. https://www.ernestwright.co.uk/history/

Hi, Plumbing 101 question! I fitted a water filter under the kitchen sink which feeds a separate tap. The new tap is still a bit loose and can swivel easily. I need to tighten the nut under the sink but it's at the back left of the sink unit. Simple question - what's the best tool to use? Should I buy a basin wrench or try with a pliers? Thanks!

Is the cost of tools with legs a cost the self-builder just has to accept? I've begun to get a bit fed up of small things going missing: a key-less chuck, small hand tools, a wheel barrow, an fairly serious attempt at appropriating a mixer. Not committed by thieves, just tired builders throwing stuff in their van at the end of a hard days work, too tired to care....

There were a couple of years of planning, while we were talking about generalities , that I tended to overlook the number of German and Austrian products I looked at. And then @Bitpipe wrote that post about Megabad, and someone ( @Stones ?) asked me to do a bit of translation - as did someone else. How nice, I thought, they like German stuff. Me on the other hand, I wanted to buy locally - put money into local businesses and suppliers, use British products. Got to be cheaper. Well, here's a little list; Piling company: uses a 20 year old piling rig (Zeppelin) made in Austria, powered by an 8 liter Magirus Deutz "Best in the business" says the rig driver Doors and Windows: Gaulhofer - Austrian Thresholds : Purenit - Austrian Brickslot drains: ACO - German Build: Durisol: German design, ICF 40 years old, locally produced Bathroom kit: Geberit Washing Machine: Bosch Hand tools and workroom kit: Bosch. I am proud to own a DeWalt nailer though. Build Standard: passivhaus That's most of our budget spent abroad. I suppose some of these companies might have parent companies elsewhere It occurred to me today that I might as well hang the German and Austrian flags on our HERAS. That'd go down well on our lane - really really well.
