Hey everyone, Wasn't sure where to post this, but 'Building Materials' felt like the best spot. I'm reaching out to the experienced builders here because for your insights. Having spent several years in the field, I understand the hassle of pricing jobs, a sentiment echoed by my builder friends. Nowadays I am a skilled programmer looking to address this issue. I have a simple, user-friendly solution which will be free for builders to use (I'll explain more later). Here's the gist. Imagine starting a new quote, and the customer's name and email seamlessly import from your saved clients. You can add line items effortlessly. The 'Product Search' feature lets you explore local suppliers, showing prices and locations (see mock-up image below). A simple click adds your chosen product to the quote. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and any ideas to improve, change or refine this solution. I want to code exactly what real world builder genuinely need. Regarding the decision to offer the app for free, the concept is to provide the tool that allows users to price jobs for free. There's will be an option to unlock additional features through an upgrade to offset any cost I incur on the free tool. Some feature ideas include invoicing, a job timer, office calendar, team management, and more. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on feature ideas too.

Been a builder for near on 40 years and done a little bit of everything over the years. Lived around the world a bit, from various countries in East Africa to New Zealand, and now pretty settled in Norway. Favourite work is the restoration of old brickwork using lime mortars, oh and fixing stuff, from cars to boats and everything in between. Was a silver trowel awarded bricklayer at college many moons ago. Love helping folks sort out their stuff, be it repairs, restorations or improvements.

Hello we have just bought a house, and we would like to open our fireplace to have more space around the log burner, I took out the fire this weekend and hacked off some of the plaster around with a SDS drill, we want to open up by about 6 inches each side, but im concerned it will be to wide for the chimney breast. Please see the picture below and if somebody can advise what I should do that would be amazing. My concern is that if I hit the bricks down on each side this will go through the chimney breast, or at least the first skin.

Need some assistance with agreeing the payments with our builder pls. We’re having a side extension and a Hip to gable loft conversion with rear dorma and work starts mid feb. He’s just sent his payment details over and we need to go back with a proposal. He has asked for £18k upfront (mid feb) and then a further payment of £22k before 1st March. Next payment of £20k before 1st April and then final payment of £5k on completion. im obviously not going to agree to this and need to get something that minimises risk for us whilst still keeping him happy. He is a small company and this is prob why he’s asked for such large payments upfront. we want to pay in stages as soon as work Is complete ie foundations in, roof structure done for loft but not sure what to propose as his quote isn’t broken down so don’t know individual charges. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Could someone advise me on what these red bricks are running along the front of my house wall? They look like vents maybe however i already have air vents at the bottom of the wall if you see the picture. I want to remove the red bricks but not sure if i should or not. All the houses down my street are the same style/design however mine is the only house with these odd red bricks vents. Please advise. Dean

We have found our preferred builder and he has given us a huge list of former clients to speak to for references... would love some ideas on what to ask. Guess it is good to know strengths/weaknesses etc so we can keep an eye out and head off any issues before they arise. Any tried and tested questions or things that you have found useful? Thanks!
