Installing sliding patio doors - what goes in the cavity?
richie9648 replied to richie9648's topic in Doors & Door Frames
Thanks - what’s the ‘normal’ way to deal with the cavity when installing patio doors? -
Hi Im having some sliding doors fitted in a few months and the door installers have insisted that I insulate the cavity (which I get) and install compac foam cavity closer (on the base and sides) so that the door can be fixed securely and also for thermal bridging. it was a bit of a last moment decision to with these guys and the builder has poured concrete in the base cavity but the door people are insisting on the compac foam to be installed can they not just fix to the concrete that has gone in? Is the compac foam a normal thing as I’ve never heard of it!! thanks

Having a debate about straight bond v staggered Bond on extension roof. Builder says they can be bonded straight - I say not as it will have higher risk of leaks tell me he is talking nonsense please?? Thanks

Hey all - I know nothing about boilers or how they work so need some advice. I need a system boiler to run 2 bathrooms (3 in future) 7 rads and a 3.5kw UFH system covering 100m2 downstairs. Problem is I don’t have space for the unvented cylinder tank that come with the system boilers. I thought a large weighted 35kw combi would be ok but I don’t want to risk it. Doing the research I have seen that valiant and viesmann do an equivalent system boiler ‘in a box’ eg the viesmann 111 which is a storage combi boiler. Anyone have experience of these and recommend what would be the best one to get?? Any recommendations more than helpful. Thanks appreciated

Hi I had some height issues so went with the Omnie - not installed yet though -
Thanks @wozza Will I need to reset once I have disengaged the chain ?
-
I’ve realised on one of my velux installs I’ve not engaged the lock properly and that is failing to close properly. It’s an electronic integra window operated by remote control. I understand the lock should be at the top not at the bottom as I’ve got in the picture. Is there a way of repositioning this in situ (so I don’t have to take the window down). I have tried a bit of brute force with no impact !!

Yes still under warranty- bought a few months back -
Hi I have 4 solar velux windows and all work fine apart from one which seems to close and then for some reason opens again very so slightly. The strange thing is that when it rains the sensor kicks in and then closes normally i tried to upload a video but can’t get it to upload on here ?

Hi I’m having new patio doors fitted. Currently there is an air brick on each side of the property (extension) ducted through to the suspended timber part of the house. For some reason also they have been fitted at ground level. I am having the doors fitted flush to a new patio area and fitting an ACO drain at the edge. Will there be sufficient ventilation - can air pass through the bricks and out the top of the ACO drain or am I compromising the ventilation here? it’s a little bit like the pic in the link below but the airbrick is below the door and I’m looking to raise the patio upto level of the door https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/patio-half-covering-air-bricks.572322/

Does the foil on the PIR boards act as VCL?? A second layer of inso' across the studs prevents any cold bridging through the studs thus preventing the risk of shadowing. (Would this be correct?? i can’t remember how much insulation he mentioned. I don’t have drawings to hand just about to start on the roof that’s why I am asking about Downlights -

it’s a warm roof - 100mm of insulation It’s a warm roof with 100mm insulation installed Ok so it sounds like that I can’t have spot lights without having to lower the ceiling a bit further which I don’t want to do. what about pendants ? Could I install a pendant without lowering the roof space so will look into surface mounted -
Hi I am having a pitched roof extension a bit like the pic attached i want spot lights in the roof but the electrician is saying that I will need to lower the ceiling by 5-6 inches so that the insulation isn’t compromised. Is this right - I’ve seen loads of pics where the spot lights are installed in the roof that way.

Thanks for the options Marvin - thinking about them: Add an airbrick to the side of the building where there is going to be no patio. - Yes this would be possible given we will be digging the concrete floor in the kitchen area and potentially have the option to do this with ducting to the timber floor area. My only concern is that its a semi detached house and the alleyway to the garden where I could do this is only around 70cm so the air flow might be restricted Add an airbrick in the wall 150mm above the patio each side of the patio doors ducted down - not possible as there is a concrete slab which wont be taken up Break down below the airbrick and extend a duct under the proposed patio foundations to come out either on a side or at the end of the patio - this sounds like a potential but the patio will be flush to the garden/grass area. Do you think if we ducted out and put a grate in horizontally on one of the patio slabs - would that provide any airflow / ventilation?

Hello all Just wondered if I can get some advice - I am having new patio doors and laying a new patio to the garden and looking to get a flush finish into the patio from the doors. However there is airbrick in the wall directly under the doors which is connected to ducting into the old part of the house which is suspended timber flooring. How could I achieve this finish with the airbrick and still provide enough ventilation into the house. Any genius ideas that could help me out here? Pic below

Hi i have getting sliders put in on the back - 6m across Do I need to specify trickle vents?? If I have 4 velux windows on the roof which also have a trickle vent facility, would this be sufficient enough - the trickle vents on the sliders are rather ugly !!!? TIA

It’s not a blind Tony - it’s the actual window that I have bought
