Is Howdens cheaper than online retailers?
Fallowfields replied to Thorfun's topic in General Joinery
@Thorfun What did you do in the end, Im at the same stage, doors architrave and skirtings. -
Done. Good job there wasnt a comment box, you would have got me started. I say one word PLANNING!! Some of the unreasonable requests for the silliest reasons has cost us dearly in internal space and insulation, difficulty in laying out bathrooms. No storage which was caused by roof requirements losing no end in bedrooms. They ask for efficiency and create inefficient buildings by means of their requests for 1.5 storey houses.

I must admit i do like an airing cupboard, being old school. Shower wet room will be right next door so good for towels, looking on the brighter side

Oh Lord, not planning, sod that. I will build a cupboard! Thanks for the reply

Following on from another thread where I asked advice on this heating method, no idea how to link it. Basically, we have had quotes but Im cheesed off that I may lose most of my utility to a cylinder cupboard. Has anyone got a horizontal cylinder in their loft and are there any disadvantages to this. TIA FF

Just started a self-build in Dorset. Exciting times!
Fallowfields replied to NailBiter's topic in Introduce Yourself
I just picked up on this, trawling blocks. I like the sound of the reveal to make it brighter and more cottagey. Are there any technical issues involved or is it purely decorative. I mean is any more support required in order to angle the reveals? FF -
This is taking the P..... surely?

Different animal im afraid. They seem to not notice the difference between working on a developers site to working on the more personal build. I would check where they have been peeing and chucking their rubbish 😂 God forbid you berrate them, it will be tools down. Have you got dust sheets to cover the lot, it may seem a bit more off bounds then, if its covered -
Good shout, yes, I will consider the windows positions and sizes to gain the best solar gain, thank you. FF

Following the Govs decision to give more time to introduce net zero. I kind of had it in my head we were to be stuck with ASHP with underfloor heating, although the installation would be hideously expensive and the usage not very much more cost effective than other heating types. It seems now we may not be stuck with one option given the extension and a longer time scale to make the changes. We are quickly sliding into our pension years and im now confused as to which system (no gas available) we should employ. Is there anywhere truthful where you can compare how economic all systems are. Ive googled and thats hopeless, one says ASHP another said Electric and ive even read that oil is!!! If I ask a plumber, of course they say the systems they supply are the best. Has anyone found any honesty?

Planning are insistent on a dormer
Fallowfields replied to Fallowfields's topic in New House & Self Build Design
Like this idea, i tried a kind of copy and paste over to see it blend with the neighbour, not sure thats techy enough for the planners but I will look into this, thank you -
Wow design without blowing budget
Fallowfields replied to Stonehouse's topic in New House & Self Build Design
I like this, I can imagine it with walls finished. The unfinished doorway is already making me want to walk through and look at the view, so def a winner when all done. -

Thank you very helpful. Ive spoken with the Architect who has managed to drop the house by 1M. My effort to compromise on the dormer they so want and I hate, ive looked at the catslide dormer which is of the 17c I believe, so its not the housing development eyesore which perched on a stylish farmhouse design. it kind of works well as it looks like the roof has been lifted rather than hideously plonked on. Going to try to get away with just the side extension only so it will be the ensuite only affected. Fingers crossed!! -
