  1. What ashp thread, this isn't an ashp thread. Its an extension thread, & if at the end of building it its fkn cold.. I've got to get it sorted: figuring out & getting this damn issue-ridden ashp fixed, is just part of it. thanks for the contribution tho- terrific.
  2. Great- much appreciated as always Onoff. Ive dug out some scribbles/ I wrote down distance from french doors > back to joist 1 > then to joist 2 etc (where exactly I measured to.. I can only assume front edge of joist/ muggins didnt think to put this info on!). Why Ive no idea! So 360mm to joist 1, 600 to j2, 610 to j3 (& a 61.5" figure at this juncture). This info should help I guess. 600 from j1 to j2 looks useful? quite far fwd, near french doors tho. Access: as to PeterW's idea I now understand.. I'm not sure how I'd know: would pics of the ceiling being built be best judge? I seemed to recall thinking 'board it/ useful for a loft if I could' IE just for storage, not a room. So I'd think midpoint, I could stand stooped over let's put it, maybe 5ft or so.
  3. Ok thanks ST. This is ridiculous. Ive said I have no choice but turn it off if I want to sleep; its clear here you just want to blame me now for seemingly anything at all bc you're impatient & assuming Im not doing what's suggested/ you're not understanding how I can only wait till its fixed & the noise fks off, to be able to keep it on overnight/ then do things that are being suggested.
  4. ST with respect, i am sleeping because im turning the whole shebang off 11 pm, turning it back on 6.30 am. Apart from last noght when i forgot.. and it woke me up at 5.20am. On friday, this noise will be fixed they say.. so i just have to wait until i can do your idea. Im not in contact with any installer. They refuse to answer, so i have only vaillant as options to try and get xyz fixed. I still have a water leak low pressure issue too. Thats not gonna help, esp if i come in turn on 6.30 am and get an error code i have to call them up at 8 am to walk me thru turning taps etc to remedy.
  5. Hi Peter.. can you explain what you mean here, 'not enough access up there for me to get there'. thx zh
  6. Great ideas as usual Onoff. Yes Im thinking this ideal, if ive got this timber frame bit ready, and perfectly sized for it. This will be lions share of the job.. what i really need the advice on, beforehand. Do you know if timber frame builds like mine have a typical ceiling joist spacing? Maybe this fig is industry std, and this hatch marries to this fig.. ideally i need to know this fig before i start cutting into pb.
  7. @SteamyTea appreciate the thoughts, get your ideas. But look I cant leave it running.. as the noise is too intrusive to sleep. Once I get this fixed, finally on friday they say ( but no confidence & my patience has run out with even the vaillant engineers having another week of this fkn noise to put up with, or, very cold house 1 st thing if i turn it off last thing at night to sleep).. then i can determine xyz, do tests both you & Peter have been kindly outlining. thanks zoot
  8. Interesting, but dont i need to add timber nogs for structure, if im hauling my ass up onto the top of it here?
  9. I was thinking put flow temp to 50*, just for a bit more econo.. im very concerned with the running cost so far, esp for such little gain. But seeing which rooms get warm, is primarily dependent on the insulation values surely.. apart from my anomally new room, seems as cold as an uninsulated room.. i really need to test the output of the rad, taking into acc its size, but how is the q. I guess i cant tho.
  10. I cant for another week due to/ until wretched overnight noise is stopped, so cant run it overnight even to 15*. It seems 20.5* is best it can get to in thermostat spare room, after 10 hrs (desired 23* 8am). I do have the new top room to 17.4*, best yet, put a blanket over doorway as a test, not expecting much but 1* better. Its a start. So Ive got to put insulation on door back, will ruin the cottage look, shame. Still hat & scarf mind you, only a semblence of warmth. Cold nose, putting on a mask helps.
  11. I notice today, the rads have only just gone into "4th gear" coincidentally just after last reply. So for 1st time today, they've a chance of getting the rooms a little warm. But 6 hours of rads in "2nd gear" = my top new room from 10.9* at 8am > to 14.5* 2pm. Its this block period, today of 6 hours, they're only in "2nd gear" I cannot cope with. I asked the vaillant guy about it, as it seemed to be in the morning 1st thing as I said before, & he said yes its on a 'timer' to be quieter until 8am (so it admits it makes some noise then if so) then rads go into "4th gear". Ok can I cahnge this I asked.. yes. so somehow I might be able to. But next day? 7.45am rads were in "4th gear". So his spiel was total BS, or, something else depends on it too he didnt say. Now today, if they're meant to able tio be in "4th gear" from 8am.. they haven't until 2pm. I hate this thing so much.
  12. I could do, I do have an electric oil filled rad. Installers never been back, only Vaillant have. I successfully rejig'd the prviously afaict set-too-low 0.8 curve and 45* flow temp, over the phone to vaillant tech dept, to 1.2 and 55*. And noticed immediately rads better temp ie "4th gear" quite regularly. Last night they seemed a good temp (albeit only getting my top new room to 14.8*).. but today I notice them mostly only in "2nd gear", the odd "3rd gear" period. So the low 16.5* thermostat room figure seems to coincide with this. So the Q to the chaps wasn't relevant.
  13. Is 16.5*, the big number, current room temp in the spare room, with 23* put in as a desired temp.. after heating on for 5 hours (upped to 1.2 heat curve, upped to 55* rad temp.. tho theyve felt rarely hot all today), is this to be expected-? In kitchen, with the ch on plus a fan heater on almost continually, hat scarf thermals, but legs, nose/ I'm just deeply cold. I just dont know what to expect from this thing, hot rads or as they are, tepid warm? its driving me mad just understanding what its doing.
  14. Can someone comment on my temp figures. Fig (no CH on overnight) in my new top room, at 8am.. 10.9*C. If I put the rad on all day in here (like PeterW suggests alternating between 18* and 20* on thermostat) the max I can get in here is 14.6*. I'm not sure if this is to be expected with this ashp, or what tbh. Or even if its even a relevant 'test' reading. All I know its never once felt warm. An awful lot of effort for very small gain it seems to me. I don't yet know how to keep heating on overnight, at say 15* (& risk the wretched pump noise coming on if the compressor hits this figure, & idles.. but this is 1st thing to do once overnight pump noise is rid by these boards fix).. or if this is now a "set back" setting. Or do I just dial down the heating figure from say 20* to 15* at 10pm say. Or do I adjust my 10* (currently) to15* into this 'moon symbol' setback night period? I do have to do the loft asap. So I assume a Q of packing between the 600mm centres (I think 600), joists, without falling thru. Rockwool then put orange fluff back over the wood joists-? I am really up against it finacially at the mo- so optimal/ very best xyz isn't an option. 1st I got to find these joists to make a hatch- I have a stud detector but no idea how it works/ can 'find' wood, unless witchcraft involved. thx zH
  15. Sire wrost you mean.
  16. That sounds like stress tho- being welsh they'll just pull up drawbridge & Im left with this list to sort out. No Im still going softly-softly, Ive got a new idea of seeing if they'll agree to provide some soundproof stuff.. if I say 'instead of the silencer perhaps?' as I was trying them on this addition, before Vaillant offered to do it. IE no installer work, just provide materials pls. Bit of a shock on the thermometer: thermostat room's at 18*, compressor gone off.. in new top bedroom: 11.7* (huge rad on for 4 hours). Lordy Ive got to do this hatch/ insulation job pdq now (& door- some cold coming in here). Can we get joe to swap his o key fir his i key? ir has he git them wring way riund?
  17. Actually I do pootle round here at 20mph! Im so sleep deprived its not safe for everyone even so.
  18. Well Ive done enough hollerin, Vaillant good & pro enough to take all on the chin, & send person after person out & replace and add things.. to ridiculously little effect admittedly; installers though terrible enough to refuse replying or p/u the phone. Ive got onto Co above the installers, & at the top of 'chain' overseeing the whole scheme too: pleasant calls back, emails etc... but nothing done, still water leak (worse today I notice) wires and holes. he's told installers to be in touch.. but they've not done so. So I gotta wade in with more calls/ emails to these two guys > to get onto installers. I mean most would've given up tbh, but I cant afford £60/hr plumber rates to get this leak fixed. Its exhausting. gotta be a month continual wrangling. And its exactly as it was. omg. Can we all chip in to make joe's little finger rhs 1cm longer?
  19. @joe90 appreciate that post joe. Ive only put up with it this long bc its a grant thing, no way on earth Id still be accepting visits to fix xyz if Id paid for it. I must be grateful for my workshop warm room, the rads which can (afaik) be used with somthing else (IF..) & the efforts by these chaps, plus advice here of course. @PeterW I wrote down your settings 22* and 18* with times idea, & showed them to the head UK engineer (one of the chaps apparantly) who said perfectly good suggestions (maybe just drop overnight 10pm-6am to 15* perhaps) but whether a more efficient way to run it all 'dependent on my house heat loss'. So I get that. Anyway another week to see if this is fit/ useable, before I can try some ideas to run it better. urgh. I'll get my replies down shorter too/ not stress-spiel as Im prone to. Cheers zooter schmooter.
  20. JesusHchrist. 5 hours here, 3 of them, compressor silencer fitted- has made the tiniest bit of difference imaginable, but, seems to have only just shifted the droning groan to different areas of the house. I can now hear it in the kitchen- I couldn't before. Also what they came to do, primarily the pump noise/ overnight thing.. they put in one of two boards, which didn't work.. so removed it & put back old board. Will do both boards now next visit, maybe end of next week they said. Ive no confidence this issue will be fixed ever now. The hardware is infuriating & utter junk. So now I'm back to sq1 & to soundproof the whole upstairs cupboard & onwards/ may as well rip out whole inside of this room & redo it. How on -earth- anyone else puts up with this damn system's noise within their house (if this fkn box thing has been put in it) is utterly beyond me. Obviously uk folks being usual reticent lot, just wont complain. Or they just are & Vaillant not letting on. My spare room's now definitely, finally unuseable as a bedroom.
  21. Yes, the same, wheelhead valves each end of all rads. So not quite sure where, or if I have any lockshield ones. Will come back to this: someones gotta fix the leak/ pressure issue, tidy up holes & wires so I'll get them to do this (hopefully) if I can get this installer visit achieved. Anyway now, 2x Vaillant chaps here, plus head manager(!) who apologised for all noise trouble, took my points on board he said (bboy pants on for recent calls, emails demanding they contact germany for definitive answer to noise > solution -before- visit today)... & they did contact germany, & found the (software) problem > ! > have 2 boards to fit as solution, & certain will solve it. Yet another visit to come.. to fit 2nd board! But again, I'm grateful & give much credit to Vaillant chaps here & on phones, its a shame the hardware falls far short of their professionalism.
  22. Hi Peter- thats very useful info thanks. I think this is more to do with tweaking for optimal, which I'll get to very last thing, if it can be liveable with (noise issues fixed). In the meantime, I see Ive got wheelhead valves 2 of each side of all rads. If I just turn my one 'too hot room' rad down say to 1/2 on one of these wheelhead valves, am I allowed to do this, and will it mean approx 1/2 heat output from it? (or should I turn both of its valves to 1/2?).
  23. I'm unsure if I can, bit confused with PeterStarck's saying they're lockshield somethings, end of the line rad so will unbalance or something. The white placcy caps dont exactly say to me 'yes you can turn up to 5 max, 3 mid, 1 low', with just a feint embossed +......- on the tops. thanks dpm.
  24. Understand this thermostat place is likely wrong. I asked it be in spare room, bc I'd no idea how to answer 'where would you like it?' I took a guess. So: this likely placed wrong, the position of noisy box unit (they shjould know makes some noise) shouldve been put waaay away from beds in my UT room, the lagging awol, the outside leak > low pressure issues, live wires left, holes not filled, carpets partially ruined... are all installers' perogative/ mistakes. But cannot contact them/ refusing contact. Ive bullet-pointed these in a very firm email, no reply. Moving thermostat/ controller isn't difficult tho.. so if I have to do it so be it, tho 10m of cable needed, undoing the box thing to attatch, and mounting it far from idea sol I shouldn't be having to consider doing all this. Trouble is the only places downstairs, are very cold rooms, so conversely I'll get it reading temperature low all the time.. which I think would equate to heat compressor likely being on continually, all day long. -- If they rid the overnight noise today (job1, priority) & fit the compressor silencer gesture (job2)... then... I can start putting 'normal' settings in, maybe run it as your suggesting, be on board to entertain ideas/ optimal runnings/ go over replied suggestions. But you see how this dreadful intrusion has c*cked up everything so royally. Until its quiet overnight, I cant use it properly/ or at all tbh & has to go.. it is currently UFFP. This time tmrw I'll know & its final final decision, keep or remove: IT'S ALL dependent on the appt. today by the ape & master.
  25. No Peter, the Vaillant guy set it to 10* overnight (in setback mode, moon symbol). Why? put very low, so it has every chance of being totally off/ silent. Ok the heating is silent, but as said the indoor box unit wakes up does its awful noise on/off regardlessly.. separate point. But the heating comes on as set to at 6.30. Its been upped to a higher flow temp 55 degrees. Higher heat curve 1.2 zoothorns. So, what do I find, results-end, at the radiators, after this tweaking.. at lets say at 8am.. & ultimately what do I feel the room conditions to be? So I turn on system at mains 6.30. It goes into 'heating compressor active' (after turning taps to rid the low pressure warning!). The desired temp is 20* from last night when it went off. I dial it up a wee bit to 22*. I leave it on like this until 1pm (dial it down to 18* until evening for eg). Ok. 8am. Radiators are barely on, have been like this since 6.30. Rooms conditions: extremely cold. 9am, some semblence of warmth, but essentially rooms cold, 10 am the same, 11am the same >>>> all day, every room. APART FROM one, the workshop (@8am some warmth, 9am nicely warm, 10 almost too warm, 11 am defo so, open the door a bit: fantastic results in here, I must take this to heart).
