September 6, 20188 yr Hi All, Currently starting to plan my self-build and we have been very impressed with the designs from Border Oak, we especially like the internal exposed beams. Has anyone had any experiences with them, either good or bad?
September 6, 20188 yr Hi @PolicySucks we looked very closely at BO and although there wasn't anything wrong with them we decided not to go with them for the following reasons. Outside of about a 100 mile radius from the HQ [which were are] we would have incurred a work force levy, which ran into the £1,000s. More importantly though, we found the oak frame to be too restrictive internally. By that I mean, we found a lot of space was either lost or compromised due to the oak frame. Finally, we just found that the particular house type we would have gone for / could afford was a bit too small for us and we could afford more for less by designing a house along similar lines, including the porch!

Thanks, Did you pay an architect to design something custom or go with another oak frame supplier?
September 6, 20188 yr We drew up a design ourselves and worked with a TF manufacturer to get it through Building Warrants etc - have a look at my Blog for full details.
January 17Jan 17 Currently building one with them , very pleased with the build and the guys doing it we’re water tight now and will be completing the rest ourselves apart from plaster boarding

July 24Jul 24 FYI there are v few oak frame builds on Buildhub. We have one (not an off-the-shelf design) from Carpenter Oak which we’re really pleased with. Oakwrights are another big player, also Welsh Oak I think. I don’t think there much saving on off-the-shelf vs. custom btw except for a bit of architect’s fees.
August 27Aug 27 That’s really lovely, you must be so pleased!!! I’ve always loved border oak and been a bit jealous how they can get their timber posts to work in between windows like that. I’ve always ran into issues with security and cold bridging.
