But I could also recess the plywood between each stud and then MR board over the top of that. Any benefits or just making work for myself?

I think you've got it covered 😀 Seriously, I think you'll be OK with plywood and tiles. Prime and/or seal the plywood before tiling. You could always put a couple of coats of tanking before tiling to be sure, to be sure.

Seen online that people double up the board but I guess that's more for sound reduction from the flush and waste. Deffo need plywood in some capacity to hold the wall hung unit, which I currently don't have so can't position it up.
Nickfromwales Posted 19 hours ago Posted 19 hours ago Just use plasterboard, and ONLY use ply if you are then going to plasterboard it. Current clients MBC TF project here: Doorway 'sides' beefed up as the wall is high (vaulted ceilings) and I dislike wobbly walls with doors slamming and tiles / grout having to cope. Where the box of screws is, is where the wall mounted basin tap will reside, hence the 'letterbox' opening. I remanufactured this wall (after it was delivered by the good peeps at MBC) to suit the intended bathroom layout / bespoke design, and the bit of 9" x 2" timber you see under that will catch the two brackets of the wall hung vanity unit (1000mm wide) so you can swing off it. I added a section of 18mm OSB where the vanity mirror and wall mounted lights will reside. @Super_Paulie, work out where the vanity brackets go and add timber there only, and you'll be fine.

Has worked for us.
Oz07 Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago (edited) On site its normally always patrices set flush with the studs as @Nickfromwales photo or a beefy timber if you know the fixing height. Likely to be somewhere close to 800mm on a basin? I wouldnt personally want tiles on ply. Its likely to move more than pb as in shrink and expand. Then you've got to seal it or whatever. Just bang some roofing lath up the sides of the studs. Set it the thickness of osb board back then fill in with the osb or ply. On developer sites they use 10mm osb, bit mincey I think but it works for them. Edited 8 hours ago by Oz07

But in almost every single instance I can recall they’ve been hung like a kitchen cupboard, with a top left and a top right bracket. Vanity tops are typically 830-840mm off finished floor level, so a horizontal strip of 18mm ply from 600mm up would suffice. When ready for final fit, put 2 or 3 x 50p sized blobs of CT1 on the rear of the sink and also a few ‘dots’ along the top edges of the left and right of the unit where the sink will sit on top, and then press the sink firmly against the wall. Once the vanity is ‘hung’, I push 5mm packers under the bottom corners to swing the bottom out and then add 150mm long beads of clear CT1 (between the vanity and wall) and then pull the packers out. Push back firmly to displace the excess and then use the bracket adjusters to get it perfectly level, then clean off any excess with baby wipes, then cosmetic silicone wherever it is required. This stops any movement whatsoever, and completely negates using ‘basin bolts’ to separately fix the basin to the wall.

You’re inside the heated envelope so just lag the hot and cold pipes.
