sharpener Posted yesterday at 15:09 Posted yesterday at 15:09 ... bought from B&Q maybe 10 years ago? Needs a lot of turning to turn off completely so I would like to try rewashering it. No visible grub screw. Can't prize any cap off the top to get at any fixings. Can't turn it on far enough to see any hex flat underneath to unscrew the headworks. Any ideas?
markc Posted yesterday at 15:26 Posted yesterday at 15:26 (edited) Small screwdriver to pop the caps out of the tops, remove screw to remove knob and you will then get to take the tap apart. just re read post and you cannot get caps out? If that’s right the whole cap/knob may be held with a snap ring and just pulls off …. With some force ….. or it may shatter! Edited yesterday at 15:28 by markc
G and J Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago I’m sure the chrome cap will prize off. You may have to soak in viacal or similar and work your fingernails under it, but I would be very surprised if you didn’t find a grub screw under the cap.
SteamyTea Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago I used to have the same taps. As other have said. Small screwdriver to get the cap off, you need to push it into the plastic ring a bit. The, you need a Phillips screwdriver, not a Posidrive to undo the screw. Wiggle the knob off, this can be quite difficult as it can a bit corroded. Then you can get to the cartridge with a spanner. I changed all mine to quarter turn cartridges with lever taps. This was because my one armed lodger had trouble holding a kettle and turning a tap.

I have tried a thin knife blade, perhaps I just need to push harder but I would OH would like to avoid cosmetic damage. The action doesn't feel like a cartridge, more like an old-fashioned washer. In any event it goes round multiple turns. 1 hour ago, Nickfromwales said: £20 brand new...... Unfortunately I can't easily change it. The plastic backnut split in two as stupidly I had not swapped it for a brass one so there is now a lash-up holding the tap down hence the broken packing round the base. The whole sink cupboard unit was pre-assembled and then fitted in its final position and a tiled splashback installed above. I don't think there is clearance to change the tap without reversing some of this.
Nickfromwales Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago The centre caps just pop off. Small flat blade screwdriver as said above; just don’t stab yourself in the other hand when it breaks loose.
sharpener Posted 5 hours ago Author Posted 5 hours ago OH is going to pick up the Faithfull equivalent from Screwfix for £9-99 on way to weekly shop. Have got cap off now but the head is so tight in the body I can't shift it with a 12" Bahco wrench without threatening to undo the union below (putting kitchen tap and dishwasher out of use), tap will have to come out so I can put body in a soft-jawed vice. No longer a 10 minute job (are they ever?), at least then I can put it back with the correct brass backnut and fibre washer.
