Hi,

Im building a timber veranda with a zinc standing seam roof.

I plan to set two glazed panels into the roof above two sets of French doors.

I’m considering what type of glazed panels to use. I’ve looked at standard double glazed units, but these seem to come up quite pricy.

I’m need two panels - 1100 wide x 1500 long.

Could I use just 6mm toughened glass and make a frame? Would this be sufficiently robust?

Any thoughts on safe, cost effective alternatives?

Thanks very much!

If it’s just a veranda and not a heated space, then the regs are only really about safety eg should the glass break and fall on to someone. DG would be required to keep the heat in, if it was a part of the living space.

As you already are going toughened that box is ticked, but I’d not go for less than 8mm glass at that size, and for robustness I’d probably go for 10mm to be safe. 6mm is too thin afaic, as the panel is laying nearly flat so is already fighting gravity / its own weight.

Cost doesn’t go up that much for single panes of glass, it’s just bit of an uplift to get them toughened after cutting.

Seems pointless to do DG units but they would reduce the noise of rain getting through to the underside, if that is of any importance?

@craig any regs on thickness of a flat-ish glazed single roof panel in a veranda?

Is toughened glass the best option for, above your head glazing? It can shatter, sometimes dramatically, and I would have thought laminated would be better, but just my opinion, no expert knowledge.

Not that I can recall, I did something similar recently, it should be safety glass, so I would suggest laminated glass (toughened at least) and 6mm should be suffice.
