samuel1999
hi all. lets say i was gonna build an outbuilding garage 30sm out of block. its within 1m of a boundary so needs to be fire proof essentially right? well im wondering if i can get away with using timbers for rafters rather than steel? tbh ive never seen anyone use steel box section or steel purlins so im wondering if i can just use timbers and only the walls need to be fireproof? also i will be using tin on the roof. the gov websites dont really give much info as what is and isnt allowed , and its not like anyones gonna grass anyway once its all boarded out inside but would rather be safe than sorry. thanks-Sam
Russdl
I’ve just built a garage, slightly larger than your proposal but also within a meter of the boundary so had to be fireproof. Ours is single skin blockwork (clad in Rockwool EWI) and I used ‘C’ Section steel purlins for the flat roof and then plasterboard underneath. BCO were happy with that. Russdl
It was a local metal fabricator but I’m pretty sure he didn’t fabricate them himself. He knew someone that did and supplied them to me.

Conor Posted Thursday at 06:59 Share Posted Thursday at 06:59 It doesn't need to be fireproof, check the wording, it's something like "predominantly non combustible materials". It's mostly aimed at reducing spread of fire on the surface of the structure. Basically no timber cladding. I built one with block walls, timber roof with fire retardant GRP covering. I checked with planners and BC through the process and everybody was happy. What's your planned roof?
samuel1999 Posted Thursday at 12:01 Author Share Posted Thursday at 12:01 hmm interesting so just the outside in your case. im just looking to cut some costs as steel purlin are 30+ quid each and 2x6s are 10 quid so its no brainer really if i can use timber i will. i was looking to do corrugated sheet with some sort of mineral wool insulation like rockwool so in theory the timbers would be sandwiched between 2 fire rated materials 5 hours ago, Conor said: It doesn't need to be fireproof, check the wording, it's something like "predominantly non combustible materials".
