A2A heating example needed in Scotland or the North

Recommended Posts

TLDR; I am looking for a home my wife and I can visit to experience A2A heat pump heating so I can convince her it's great! We live in the Scottish Borders so somewhere in Scotland or the North of England.

...the longer version...we have moved into large, poorly insulated house with an aging biomass wet heating system. It's suboptimal for multiple reasons I won't go into here, but I'm increasingly convinced that for us A2A heat pumps in some or all areas are the answer. But I need to convince SWMBO that it won't be unpleasantly dry or draughty or noisy and really the only/best way would be to experience it and heat from others.

So, I'm hoping that someone here who lives a few hours drive from us would be kind enough to let us visit to experience it and put her mind at rest.

Take her on a holiday to the USA, there are a lot of A2A units there.

I was at a heat pump installer a few weeks back and they had a A2A unit in the conference room.

The noise was not intrusive, but they are not the prettiest things.

An alternative is an A2WHP and a combination of skirting radiators and plinth heaters (FCU).  That can also do your DHW.

Thanks, interesting site. Unfortunately can't see any A2A on there within search radius.

what kind of A2A are you considering, individual room units or a central pump/compressor unit supplying a network of fan coils?

Have you ruled out a wet system? Would be interested to know why.

Trouble with A2A is it really depends on the spec you are looking at. It varies hugely by manufacturers and price paid. As does efficiency, humidity control and noise and drafts. Good one are not cheap, but can be very efficient and nice to live with.

You get them so they add and remove humidity based on what they are set too, plus some will introduce fresh outside air, so act as ventilation also, in both heating and cooling modes.

I'm just finishing off the DIY bits of an A2A installation. It was supplied and partially installed by a guy based in Lockerbie, he was really helpful and easy to deal with. He might be a good point of contact for you. Message me and I'll put you in touch (and no I'm not on commission etc).

Oh and if it's of interest, I've chosen an underfloor ducted system. Just installing the final duct just now. I have three rooms hooked up already and I'm really impressed with the response time. Running costs look like they should be good. There is a certain level of noise but you only notice it if there's zero other background noise.

Thanks Crofter I'll send you a message. That's actually very interesting. We have quite a deep solum in most places and so this could be an option as we need the floor up for underfloor insulation in most places anyways.

PhilT, my response to this would be huge and rambling. I'll try to do something next week when I am back from camping.
