Hello from Northants and our enerphit journey

We have started on our journey of Enerphit retrofit as we are in progress with purchasing a bungalow built in 1995 and extending/ changing rooms to meet our needs and desires.

Our goal is to reach the EnerPHit standard with a retrofit plus utilise every single grant we can get and ideally get off the gas grid and bring an old house into the low energy world.

 

Very early days but have been reading a lot already around the forum.

95 is relatively young in terms of UK building stock! Should put you on the front foot for upgrading it at least! Look forward to your results and story along the way. Good luck!

As mike says, upgrading a 90's house should be easier.

 

Have you got detailed energy usage already, just simple changes to my heating and hot usage saved me 5 MWh a year.

Are you designing the Enerphit retrofit yourself or are consultants/architects designing it all?  Very important to understand at this stage.  Your first post on the subject suggests that this is your goal and it may not be achieved. This could be a funds issue - which we all face - or the fact that you are leading the design decisions.

 

Anyway, it sound exciting and I would make the following comments: In my opinion the best way to have low energy use in a property is not to use it, which means insulating the building to within an inch of it's life (if you want a comfortable temperature in the building) to start with. This will save you more than anything else you can do as heating is the number one energy user!  We have no heating unless the outside temperature is constantly below 12C during the day.

 

If I was designing our bungalow retrofit again I would have considered how to handle excess heat from the cooking/kitchen equipment, utility equipment and solar gain more. Our biggest bug is overheating.

we will have a retrofit strategy designed /created by architect. 
Yes, insulation is high on my list, having seen how much it can improve a house in cold and hot. 
My mom and my brother both had their houses done recently with 200mm graphite ewi and they barely need to heat or cool their house. Handy when outside temp reaches 40 degrees sometimes.
