Gaf Posted June 22, 2024 Share Posted June 22, 2024 Stairs in our current house are incredibly squeaky. Images below show underneath and the carpet above. The stairs originally just had the treads and no risers (just a gap). As best as I can tell, I think the squeaking could be because the risers that were added years later for the carpet. It looks like they were just fixed into place with nails (not the ones holding the carpet in place) and some nails went in at an angle and protrude through the riser. Given the risers were only added for the carpet, would there be any potential issues with removing the risers completely from a structural point of view? twice round the block Posted June 22, 2024 Share Posted June 22, 2024 I found the stringer on the wall side was moving and causing the squeak on mine, so put a couple of long screws and plugs into the adjoining wall and that cured that. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The wooden strip piece looks like it would get in the way of the blocks, likely safe enough to remove this strip and then attach the blocks?
