Short throw projector screens

Recommended Posts

Just punted on a stp ; Amazon so can always return it . 😊

Will ( for now ) be projecting onto a white wall once projector arrives .

Does a screen make a big difference ? . I mean , I can buy a motorised wall mount one from amazon for 150 quid or spend 2k ( which I ain’t ) . It’s just some taut  (expletive deleted)ing fabric ain’t it ??

Bound to be video buffs on here . Googling is doing me nut in , round the loop I go ….

Yes a good Ambient Light Rejection Screen (ALR) will make a difference. But a lot depends on the angle of throw from your projector position. This is why a few manufacturers sell the UST projector with a screen.

Ok . Mine will be a lit room I.e natural light - next to big glass sliding doors . When he showed his ‘reject light from the sides ‘ in a lit room I did go wow !

It is a game changer !

But I don’t want to spend mega money on the screen . Also his projector is a ££££ one - I went for the xgimi aura - seems to be the best performance vs cost .

But - it would seem I need a screen …

Looking at AliExpress as a cost saving excercise ! . Not sure I need / care for a motorised ceiling drop one ( assume I would want that ) . Perhaps just a big mofo alr frame on the wall …..

The xgimi aura is a very capable projector. The Texas Instruments DLP Chip 0.47” DMD is in a lot of these short throw projectors.

This guy does a good projector ladder where he covers what you get for the more you pay. There is really only 3 price bands for USTs, sub £500, £1500-£2000, over £2500.

He also does a good round up on the various screens.

If you go down the AliExpress route you should be able to get a pretty decent screen, just make sure it is for UST, these have different requirements to long throw. UST needs a lower gain. I prefer a fixed screen, but this is so room dependent and not SWMBO friendly.  In the projector community they tend to upgrade their projectors a lot. But the screen is a long term investment. Try searching AVForum.co.uk for any successful ALR AliExpress outcomes. Or you might be able to get a 2nd hand screen on the AVForum classifieds, these don’t often make it to eBay.

Yeah I’ve now read too much online and have no idea if I want a white/grey/purple screen . Gain ? 🤔 etc etc . Information overload !!.

Paralysis by analysis….. same as my build .

I also Um’d and ah’d over a motorised screen . A big fixed frame on the wall seemed ‘better’ . Because ( ignoring cost ) when the screens down ( or up ! ) what are you looking at ? A blank wall anyway ( ok you could have a picture up ) . This projector will be instead of a TV - so used casually rather than cinema night .
SWMBO has given me blank control on what we have - then I can take the wrap if wrong …

Seems quite dear for grainy copies of old 70s Super8 blue movies.

They could not even afford a razor.

But I thought you liked bearded women ?

Not set up properly yet . But the ARL screen really makes a difference . Gloomy day with ceiling lights on . Tomorrow daytime shoukd be a better test as supposedly sunny . Nearly put the screen through the ceiling 🙄

I’m bored today as men here fixing stairs again so I’m out the way doing nothing .

The awol ltv3500 pro is awesome - I don’t feel the need to adjust the image depending on content ( with nexigo you kind of did ) . Bought from Amazon . Found it a better price , so will order that and return the other back to Amazon 😊

Picture without any blinds and in daylight is watchable as a tv but obviously not as bright . Add an ALR screen and a motorised blackout blind all linked to HA and it is pretty awesome ! . Gaming is especially intense at 120” . I would go larger ( believe a guy in us stuck it on a 340” screen ! ) - but then I’d have to build a bigger house !!

I've had success in the past jumping on to Amazon chat, telling them I was going to return the product because I'd found it cheaper, and having them refund the difference. Not always - I guess it depends on how much margin they have to play with and how good a customer you are, but may be worth a try before you go through the hassle of ordering from somewhere else and returning it to Amazon...

Maybe but I like it this way . I always check it is sold by Amazon I.e 28 day no quibble returns policy exists . Also in this case it may be tricky to prove cheaper as the replacement is coming from China …
