Gill Posted December 3, 2023 Posted December 3, 2023 I'd like to pick up one of these up for domestic use. I looked at hire which seems expensive unless you can condense to a single short hire. I think we'll have plenty of use for one over the next 6 months of renovation. Given resale value (at least for flir) seems decent it might be more cost effective to buy and sell on when we're done. Mostly will be used for trying to find heat loss areas (internal, attic, under suspended floor) and assess any improvement as we try to remidiate over time. Ease of use would be a plus as the inlaws also looking to get use. Any advise from folk who have used would be appreciated. Alternatives to flir or any brands /models to avoid? Thanks
PNAmble Posted December 3, 2023 Posted December 3, 2023 We’ve just got a hicmicro B01. Works well. Using it to check for cold bridging and completeness of insulation now the frame is up. Deliberately kept away from one which attaches to our iPhones partly because the iPhone adaptor is moving to usb C. 1
Gill Posted December 3, 2023 Author Posted December 3, 2023 Thanks @PNAmble Will check that out. I also wanted to avoid phone attachment as I'm not convinced it'll be compatible with the inlaws Nokia3310. 😁 2
SimonD Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 I have a Topdon TC001. It's between £230 & £280 on Amazon. I used it a lot for work. Very happy with it. Really small but you need to choose either the TC001 with usb c or TC002 for IOS. Some images: 4 1
TheMitchells Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 I am looking at the Hikmicro E01 for £150 on amazon, to help with pinpointing draughts and areas to insulate. Seems like a good price. Has anyone else used this model and have any comments on its usefulness? thanks. https://www.amazon.co.uk/HIKMICRO-Resolution-Portable-Handheld-4°F-752°F/dp/B0CF28BNNX/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=ZPGQA3WQ5MEG&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.YfdGjI2352XpUVfZnQQHiFnUM529sTpUtPF3RYROj6jprm_fR3Snu7U4nFUfGiZ-Uz8LpW--dDw6lwP9ZaQKb8W6PdvDolxyc9td14GvgxXt5wMgfjURPB_atmHUUlpejRu_PZqf45VYg-DjBCbKIQb2JpZ-X87nmQFxIyNT637_VZwwGEzExisKlHPat_hMIlJd8KqGFLoEaiHdTZZoFYxHbq0UvdMRWZEH_Fq14rl2w9AH4_u4FFChdFOx4Up59v2MjRMQTZlCOKtSwyqfW8VWU1PwJJeapBGNxwGV_r4.7QJtPucxVTMXkNrgiTDqorIsygWrznAFZPgCcTcGT1o&dib_tag=se&keywords=hikmicro+e01&nsdOptOutParam=true&qid=1732030174&sprefix=%2Caps%2C81&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1
twice round the block Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 With black friday fast approaching there will be good some good deals about from : Blackwood Outdoors Thomas Jack's Optics Warehouse I use Pulsar thermal for pest control that cost 000's and I've purchased from the above 3 companies in the past.
lookseehear Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 I just bought a Flir One from Amazon on black friday deals for £145 - hopefully good enough for our needs.

How did you on with the Flir? I am looking at getting one, still on at the same price, is it worth the money?

I'm glad you asked (and I should have come and updated this). Don't bother with the Flir - really poor thermal resolution (60x80) and lacking things like set high and low points. I returned mine and bought the Topdon TC001 for about £200 and I'm much happier with it. The app seems better and more fully featured and the image quality is a lot better. It will also track the hottest and coolest items in the frame as well as the centre spot. 1
Bonner Posted Tuesday at 09:35 Posted Tuesday at 09:35 Thanks and also glad I asked. Reviews are very mixed, I guess many people will be happy to see a simple picture showing cold spots. Having used commercial cameras at work, that wouldn’t be good enough for me.
